About North West Lupus Group
NW Lupus is the largest regional group of Lupus UK, both in size and membership. We have over 600 members living in Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Cumbria.
We help Lupus UK to promote awareness of Lupus using their publicity materials, and we contact local hospitals regularly to update them on our work. The medical professionals provide diagnosis and treatment for Lupus, but we believe the best way to learn how to manage your life when you have Lupus, is to talk to other people who have learnt to live WITH Lupus rather than fighting AGAINST it.
A full committee meeting is held bi-monthly to discuss how best we can help the members who have contacted us.
We have telephone contacts who have attended Contacts’ Courses, some are undergoing re-training this year. These people have the skills and knowledge to help someone who may be feeling isolated, worried or confused.
We have informal coffee and chat meetings where people with Lupus and their friends or relatives can meet up to discuss Lupus, share a hobby, have a laugh or discuss fundraising. People who have been living with lupus for a long time arrange these meetings and report back to the committee any areas of concern.
At our Annual Information Day and Annual General Meeting we signpost our members to other agencies who can advise on the off-shoots of Lupus, like Sjörgrens Syndrome, Raynauld’s Phenomenon, Fibromyalgia, Hughes’ Syndrome etc. At that event our members also benefit from medical talks from local health professionals.
Our newsletter, the NW Lupus Star, is produced three times a year. It extends our work and has a circulation of 700 which includes other regional groups, our honorary medical members as well as our own members.
Our fundraising is enhanced by many healthy people who raise sponsorship for sporting events, by some members who make cards, jewellery, bags etc and by the sale of Lupus UK merchandise, as well as donations from friends, and collections in memory of loved ones.
How Lupus North West grew
More members came in from outside Manchester and the name was changed to Lancashire and Cheshire Lupus Group in 2001. By that time we had a committee of a dozen including David Price, working as Awareness Officer and Membership Secretary and Val Wilson as General Secretary, together with husbands of Lupus sufferers. Tom retired in 2005 and was greatly missed. David Price stepped in as Temporary Chairman and he was still there in 2011 ! Our present Committee has nine members and two co-opted members. In 2009 there was another spurt of growth when National Office asked us to adopt members from Merseyside and North Derbyshire. We were beginning to look for a new name again, and then in crept Cumbria ! We held our biggest Annual Meeting ever in the Mancunian Suite at Manchester City Stadium where our Director, Chris Maker, christened us The North West Lupus Group.
