The North West Lupus Group is the largest regional group of Lupus UK both in terms of the number of members and also the geographical area we cover. We have over 500 members living in Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Merseyside and the SK postcodes of Derbyshire.
As a part of Lupus UK, we promote awareness of Lupus to the medical profession and the general public.
We are here to support patients and their families and provide them with information publications from National Office.
We also have several informal coffee and chat groups around the region, where patients and their family and friends can meet with others affected by Lupus. Sometimes the conversation isn’t related to Lupus at all, but people enjoy being able to get out and meet other people who understand what they are going through. Most people find sharing their experiences and how they cope day to day is very valuable.
Another option which is increasingly popular is to chat with people online. We have a Facebook page that allows people to do just that. We also have telephone contacts who have all attended a training course run by Lupus UK and they are available for anyone who may be needing support.
Each year, we hold our AGM and Information Day. We invite members of the medical profession to talk about various aspects of Lupus. These meetings alternate between the north and the south of our area to give the chance for people from around the region to attend.
We organise a Christmas social lunch each year, the venue of which varies and there are usually fundraising activities through the year – last year we held a concert and a pub quiz.
Our newsletter, the North West Lupus Star is produced several times a year. Not only is this sent out to members, but it is also sent to members of the medical profession and other regional group.
We currently have a committee of 13 people, most of whom have Lupus themselves. We meet every two months to plan our activities so that we can help our members and raise awareness of Lupus.
